Using Geographic Information System Applications for Health in Yemen

PHRplus is developing a Health Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Republic of Yemen to allow national- and governorate-level health officials to visualize and understand health issues, and make decisions more easily.

A Health GIS links data from surveillance systems, surveys, and health information systems (HIS) by a common geographic reference point, such as health facilities or administrative districts. The GIS, combined with HIS data, can provide evidence-based rationale for a variety of applications in a health care system:

  • Improve distribution of preventive and curative care
  • Enhance facility utilization
  • Target resources to meet health care services demand
  • Assess status of health care facility distribution and needs (i.e., georeference a location using GPS [Global Positioning System], services provided, staffing levels, utilization, equipment inventory, population dynamics, or other parameters)
  • Do registry mapping (i.e., birth, death, etc.)
  • Track vector control/disease
  • Evaluate health service delivery equity and efficiency
  • Conduct demographic studies
  • Promote health care awareness
PHRplus developed a Demonstration of GIS Applications for USAID/Yemen to help inform stakeholders about the potential uses of GIS.

Health Facility viewers have been developed using the results of the 2005 Health Facility Survey. They are available for the following governorates:

Two articles on PHRplus-Yemen's GIS and HIS activities were published in the Abt Associates newsletter, International Perspectives (February/March 2005 edition).

GIS/HIS Stakeholder Meeting organized by the MOPHP's Directorate of Statistics and Health Information Systems and PHRplus
February 2004 - Sana'a, Yemen
The goal of this workshop was to bring together the Yemen GIS user community; to sensitize stakeholders about GIS and HIS for use in Yemen; to demonstrate state-of-the-art health GIS applications and analytical techniques; and to develop a common vision for collecting, organizing, and utilizing health information in Yemen. Attendees came from the public and private sector, including MOPHP officials, directors general and health statistics officers from governorates, and representatives from other donors and projects.
